LDA Engineering was selected by the City of Chattanooga to develop construction plans and specifications to improve an existing narrow roadway to a standard width road including curbs, gutters, and sidewalks. The existing roadway was approximately 18 feet wide. However, it accommodated two-way traffic from a large subdivision, several commercial and office complexes, and cut through traffic to Hamilton Place Mall. The project length was approximately 1,540 linear feet from Gunbarrel Road to Connondale Loop and the design speed was 30 MPH. The road was widened to 24 feet, with a 5 foot sidewalk along the North side of the street. In addition, construction plans were developed to improve the vertical alignment, as well as smooth driveway access to the adjacent parcels and improve storm drainage facilities sized for 10 year storm events.
LDA also coordinated utility relocations with affected utility companies during the plan development process to minimize the potential for utility conflicts during construction. Utility relocations required included water meter relocations, valve box vertical adjustment, relocation of one fire hydrant, and the valve box for the gas distribution system required vertical adjustment. LDA also assisted with right-of-way acquisitions, permanent drainage/slope easements, and temporary construction easements. In addition, LDA provided bidding assistance and engineering services during the construction to the City of Chattanooga as part of this $360,000 project. The project was designed in 2003 and constructed in 2004, and LDA completed the project on schedule and budget.
