LDA provided environmental consulting in regard to a possible wetlands area at a proposed warehouse site. Located in an industrial park, the site was suspected to cause development problems due to the soil’s dampness. To determine the area’s condition, LDA reviewed the site and modified existing hydraulic models of the adjacent stream. Once it was determined to have wetland characteristics, LDA provided consultation related to potential options for the expanded warehouse.
The site included numerous challenges such as construction in a flood plain, wetlands mitigation, and construction of access for tractor-trailer trucks over a poor subgrade material. Yet again the hydraulic models were used to ensure the building would not adversely impact floodwater elevations upstream of the development. Included in this was a “no-rise” certification required by FEMA, and the design of a bypass structure in the existing stream to divert water into the wetlands area during high flows in the stream. Other challenges included foundation design for the building which was to be constructed over soft mucky soil. Due to this, LDA designed a pile foundation to support the building and saved the client from additional removal of unacceptable soil.
