Kingsport & Downtown Culvert Inspection & Assessment

 LOCATION: Kingsport, Tennessee

 KEY PERSONNEL:

  • Jason Foster
  • Jim Albert
  • Conrad Majors

 DATES: 2015

 PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Visual Hydraulic Evaluation
  • Location of 150 Drainage Connections
  • Prioritization of Multiple Project Locations
  • Completed on a Fast Track Schedule
  • Prioritization for Repair of Structural Damage Based on Risk Assessment Rating

Our team utilized a field team of confined space trained personnel to enter the culvert and record observations of structural and hydraulic conditions. This included spalling, cracks, settling, dropped inverts, undercutting, material failure, structural damage, sediment, debris, utility encroachments, and legacy construction material for 6,800 linear feet of 10’x6’ and 10’x4’ box culvert.

We also conducted a survey of the exterior to provide benchmarks along the culvert alignment for using locating the observations from above. Through use of photographic, video, measurement, survey, benchmarking, and visual assessment we determined the condition of each structural observation for probability of failure and consequence of failure. In addition, we located each utility encroachment and through the same observation evidence, determined the probability of hydraulic impediment due to clogging or debris and consequence of utility damage due to clogging or debris for each utility observation.

We also drafted a report of the findings of the visual evaluation and assessment utilizing maps and tables so that an implementation schedule could be developed by the City for planning future improvements and scheduling condition-driven maintenance. The photo and video log for the project included over 1,200 photographs and 300 videos.
